PC/X Windows95/98 FAQ

**Digi International has decided the PC/X, PC/4, PC/8 or PC/16 will not be a supported product for it’s Tech Support Division for customers using Microsoft software for the following reasons:

· This product is a non-intelligent device with no device drivers available.  In the past, Digi has assisted with registry input and correction., Digi will no longer assist in registry input or correction for non driver supported boards. The only customer support that will be supplied is documentation for the installation and configuration of this product with Windows95/98 from Digi International's Web page. Digi International Tech Support will not walk the customer through a configuration of the product -- this is covered by current documents located on the web page. Digi International will assist in running Digi International diagnostics with this product to confirm that the board is functioning properly. The diagnostics program is not required to run unless there is a problem with the installation of the device.

· The recommended replacement for the PC/X is the Classic ISA board when using Windows 95/98 or Windows NT for use with Point of Sale (POS) applications. Digi does not recommend non-intelligent products for use with modem devices due to excessive CPU loads on your computer system.

Digi International recommends the following:

· It is recommended that the assistance of a local MCSE (Microsoft certified systems engineer) be pursued for registry assistance.

1.  I can't find a driver for this adapter, how can I install it under Windows95/98?

2.  When I try to open the com port I get an "Unable to open port." error, what's wrong?

3.  How do I test the board to make sure it's working properly?

4.  When I open the port and try a loopback test with hyperterm (see question 3), no characters are echoed back, what's wrong?

1.  I can't find a driver for this adapter, how can I install it under Windows95/98?

You can find detailed intallation instructions here:  ftp://ftp.digi.com/support/drivers/win98/pcx_win98.txt

2.  When I try to open the com port I get an "Unable to open port." error, what's wrong?

This error can occur for a few reasons.  Make sure any application that might be trying to access the port is closed.  If the port is opened by any other application, when you try to open it with hyperterm, etc., you will not be able to open it.  If you close all applications that are trying to access the port and you still are getting these errors, try setting the adapter to use different  IO addresses.  You can change these with the dip switches.  If all else fails, make sure you have followed the instructions in question 1 above.

3.  How do I test the board to make sure it's working properly?

See this document:  Testing ports with hyperterm.

4.  When I open the port and try a loopback test, no characters are echoed back, what's wrong?

If this is a newer machine, you may need to go into your bios to reserve the IRQ.  This should be explained in the documentation for the motherboard or machine you bought.  If that still doesn't work, try running the dos diagnostic utility.  It's located here:  ftp://ftp.digi.com/support/diags/dos/STD/
